Then he moved to Zurich and wrote "Ulysses". Then he went to Paris and wrote "Finnegas Wake" and died in 1941 in Zurich. XMind EAT City, relationship and travel; Stream of consciousness: literary technique which consists in reproducing the free flow of feelings and thoughs of the characters without comment by the autor. In his works interior monologue is very frequent (direct and indirect), where the writer almost disappears; Main themes and technique JAMES JOICE He use third-person omniscent narrator, internal narrative prospective and sometimes internal narrative perspective DUBLINERS (1914) The protagonists are inhabitants of the city of Dublin, "spiritually weak", who are afraid of others and are in some way slaves of their culture, of their family and political life, but above all of their religious life. In the book, the stories of their daily life are told. The stories present the city of Dublin in four aspects: childhood, adolescence, maturity and public life. The author expresses his love and contempt for Dublin, a microcosm and summary of the new world. Paralysis affects the moral, intellectual but also practical sphere, while flight is a consequence of static. Escape is always doomed to fail. A way to escape from the universal paralysis is "epiphany", that means revelation of the condition of characters' paralysis. ULYSESS (1922) The novel is set in Dublin and tells the vicissitudes of three characters: Leopold Bloom, his wife Molly and the young Stephen Dedalus. He uses the flow of " consciousness technique" to give voice to his characters and their deepest thoughts. Itis precisely the disordered flow of the thoughts of the protagonists, who jump from one memory or thought to another, without logic that makes the plot interesting but also complex.
