James Joyce One of the best writers who had voiced/expressed the existential crisis of man during the first years of Twentieth century is James Joyce. James Joyce was born in Dublin and he studied in Trinity College, with catholic education. Eveline “Eveline” is one of the fifteen short stories of the first great work of james joyce: “dubliners”. Eveline is sitting at the window and her mind flows towards her past and actual life. In the end she thinks of her fiancè: frank, and she is charmed by his strenght and generosity. The time of the story isn't a cronologichal time and the feelings aren't presented in their logical sequence. In his works, he describes the changes of identity during the different ages of life: youth, adolescence, maturity and adulthood. Eveline is a normal girl and she summarizes all the features joyce wanted to tribute to dublin population: the lack of enterprise and a sense of resignation. Moreover dublin has a personal value for joyce, but it also represents all the city of the world and so eveline's inner conflict is the personal struggle of everyone. ULYSSES is a modernist novel by irish writer james joyce. The novel is set in Dublin, in a singol day. The protagonist is Lepond Bloom, a Dubliner. His activities parallel in some way the adventures of homer’s Ulysses. This work is similar to the odyssey for the events and for the characters. Joyce shows how the problems of the classical word are the same of the modern man. The difference is that the protagonist of this work is imperfect, Uliyses is the antihero, a man completely different from a greck hero. Finally, the time of the story isn’t a chronological time.
