JAMES JOYCE (1882 – 1941) The grandeur of ordinary life He was born in Dublin into a large family that educated him at Jesuit schools. In college he studied the French, Italian, German and English literature, graduating in 1902. While Yeats wanted to create an Irish national conscience, Joyce wanted to expand the European culture writing about Ireland’s awareness as a portrait of its life from a European, cosmopolitan viewpoint. In 1903 his mother gets sick and he – who at that time lived in Paris – must come back to Dublin. 1904 meet and fall in love with Nora Barnacle. They moved together to Italy, in Trieste, where James becomes friends with Italo Svevo. Nora and James had two children and married in 1931. 1914 he published Dubliner. With his writings, he wanted to render life objectively and give a real image of it. In his narrative techniques, he used realistic prose, exploration the characters’ impressions with directed speech, epiphany, interior monologue and stream of consciousness without punctuation or grammatical connections. Stream of consciousness = describe the thoughts that are in our minds in the way they sounds in our head. DUBLINERS 1914 It’s a collection of 15 short stories that describe the life of the Irish middle class of 20th century, in order to represent the failure to find a way out of the Irish’s psychological paralysis. Meanwhile, he wants to portrait the whole of man’s mental, emotional and biological reality. Eveline Eveline is a young woman living in Dublin with her father. Her mother is dead. Dreaming of a better life beyond the shores of Ireland, Eveline plans to elope with Frank, a sailor who is her secret lover (Eveline’s father having forbade Eveline to see Frank after the two men fell out), and start a new life in Argentina. With her mother gone, Eveline is responsible for the day-to-day running of the household: her father is drunk and only reluctantly tips up his share of the weekly housekeeping money, and her brother Harry is busy working and is away a lot on business (another brother, Ernest, has died). Eveline herself keeps down a job working in a shop. On Saturday nights, when she asks her father for some money, he tends to unleash a tirade of verbal abuse, and is often drunk. When he eventually hands over his housekeeping money, Eveline has to go to the shops and buy the food for the Sunday dinner at the last minute. Eveline is tired of this life, and so she and Frank book onto a ship leaving for Argentina. But as she is just about to board the ship, Eveline suffers a failure of resolve, and cannot go through with it. She wordlessly turns round and goes home, leaving Frank to board the ship alone.
