James Joyce The life He was born in Dublin, he was Irish . • He hated Dublin he was educated in Dublin in a Chatolic school . He rebelled against the church, he hated chatolicism , he considered religion as a real prison for the spirit . When he finished the university he decided to leave Dublin forever , he returned back to Dublin only once in his life , for her mother’s funeral , but then he decided not to come back to Ireland anymore. Relationship with Ireland He loves Dublin= all his novels are set in Dublin , he gives a detailed description of the city. He hates Dublin= dublin was the SYMBOL OF SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL PARALISYS ↓ The microcosm which represented the macrocosm of modern time •He hated the Dubliners : His 1st masterpiece was titled Dubliners : It is a collection of short stories, where he deals with the lives of ordinary people who were born and live in Dublin and weren’t able to leave dublin even if Dublin was a PRISON for them. People living in Dublin are imprisoned in their traditions , habits , religion , politics and they are not able to open up to a more cosmopolitan culture . STRUCTURE : 14 short stories + “The dead” it is considered a long short story or a short novel CHARACTERS: people living in Dublin who realize how claustrophobic life in Dublin is , they feel the necessity to escape from this cultural and spiritual prison but they are not able to leave Ireland and go to other countries where they might know new cultures/ people. •Joyce realized that Dublin was a prison and made the choice to leave Ireand : Joyce on the contrary wanted to open up to other cultures, ideas , movements . - He moved to Switzerland , Italy , Paris, and Switzerland again until his death. - In Italy he set in Trieste where he became the teacher of Svevo and they spent a period of their lives togeter, they had a lot of things in common. - He met a lot of european intellectuals ,and all the meeting with those intellectuals helped him to shape his way of writing . - He decided to move to Paris when he married and there he spent a long period of his life. When the 2 ww broke out he decided to live in Switzerland until his death in 1941 at the age of 59 . He was not very old, he became blind . He also had a lot of financial problems : He couldn’t publish his works because no one wanted to publish them : • expecially in Ireland because he wanted to criticize ireland and the irish culture .The irsh couldn’t bear Joyce’s attitude towards irish culture. •On the continent it was difficult for his work to be published because his novels were considered too revolutionary , too experimental (even though Dubliners was not so experimental ) Works 1) “DUBLINERS” (He wrote Dubliners in 1904 and published it only 10 years later, in 1914)→ Collection of short stories 2)”A PORTAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN” → story of Steven Dedalus , apparently it is a traditional novel because it starts with the birth of the protagonist , but the whole story is told directly by the main character himself . The language in the first pages is the anguage used by a youg boy, As the character grows up he changes the language he uses . 3) “Ulysses” → It can be considered a maserpiece. The story develops over ONE DAY. •Ulysses is a mythical character, he was a person who wanted to travel all around the world to get to know new things , to have new experiences and experiment new adventures, in order to come back to his country and discover a new place where he could live in . • So it is the story of a long journey all over the world which metaphorically reresents his journey into his own self . •He ironically opposed → - the mythical charachter , this hero of the past - to a non hero of the present who is Mr. Bloom : he’s ironically Ulisses but he doesn’t travel all around the world , but he travels in the streets of Dublin . •During this journey he meets a lot of people , one of the people he meets is Steven : a young man who’s looking for a father(a point of reference); Mr.Bloom instead is looking for a son . When Mr Bloom decided to go back home he decided to take Steven with him. • At home his wife was waiting for him, who was ironically called Penelope , in the myth Penelope is a very loyal wife who waited for his husband her entire life,she’s the symbol of loyalty . On the other hand Mrs. Bloom is not Loyal at all , she is a ordinary and banal woman without any kind of education. Ulysses marks the best of his litterary experimentation: there he uses extreme experimentation: • he abolished any kind of grammatical structure; • he uses both the 1st person singular and the 3rd p.s and the reader doesn’t really realize where the limit between an omniscent narrator and the use of the interior monologue lies. 4) “FINNEGANS WAKE” → the novel was published only after his death , it is really experimental and it is almost impossible to understand what he wrote. • It is the story narrated by Finnegan , who is the protagonist, Joyce describes his thoughts in the moment between the sleep and wake. Everything is confused and illogical. Joyce’s style • He ‘s realistic in the usage of the language : he adopts the language that the character would adopt . For example Eveline is a shop assistant , she has recieved very poor education. Joyce uses the language of a barely educated person . • Time is perceived as subjective • Everything is filtered through the eyes of the characters •He uses different point of view and narrtive techniques appropriate to the characters portrayed
