JOYCE (INGLESE) James Joyce (1882-1941) was born in Ireland by a wealthy family of strong catholic traditions. He graduated from his hometown, Dublin, where he has his most important narrative works. Driven by economic difficulties and intolerance towards the closed Irish environment, he first moved to Zurich and finally to Trieste, where he remained until 1915, shaking friendship with writer Italo Svevo. In 1920 he was in Paris where he frequented intellectuals and writers. Abandoned by France because the imminent outbreak of World War II, he moved permanently to Zurich where he lived until his death. Among his main works are the People of Dublin (1915) and the novels Portrait of the Young Artist (1916) and Ulysses (1922). Joyce puts the introspection and psychological investigation into the center of the narration and replaces the endless reality that is reflected in the minds of the characters with the objective representation of reality. The collection of stories People of Dublin is a gallery of portraits of common people in which the author wants the dublins to mirror themselves to wake up from their own passivity. Emblem of passivity and renunciation is Eveline, a young woman who doesn’t know how to choose a risky future but crowned with love and freedom for fear of breaking family ties. It should be noted, in order to frame Joyce, that the first part of the twentieth century represents a time of experimentation in all fields of culture. In the narrative, the search for new forms of expression leads the novelists to a new interest in the interior of the characters, the content and the formal aspects of the novel.
