James Joyce (1882-1941) LIFE AND WORKS 1882 Birth The oldest of ten children, James Joyce was born in Dublin into a Catholic middle-class family. 1902 Graduation from University College in Dublin? After attending a Jesuit school, he studied English, Italian and French at University College, where he graduated with excellent marks in 1902. 1903 Death of his mother When Joyce’s mother was about to die, Joyce was in Paris. He immediately came back to spend the last days with her. Mary Jane’s death marked a change among Joyce’s family members, who started to grow apart. 1904 Meeting with Nora Barnacle In Dublin, Joyce met Nora, a young girl from Galway. The two fell in love and spent the rest of their life together away from Ireland. (sexual content, which will be removed) 1905-1915 Trieste | Brief stay in Rome Thanks to his studies in Modern Languages, in 1905 Joyce started working as a teacher at the Berlitz school in Trieste. Except for a short stay in Rome and some visits to Ireland, Trieste remained the Joyces’ home until 1915. Despite these years marked by poverty, he witnessed positive events: the birth of his two children and the encounter and friendship with Italo Svevo. 1907 Chamber Music It is a collection of poems Joyce wrote during his university years. 1914 Dubliners | A Portrait of the Artist appears in serial form Dubliners is a collection of short stories set in Dublin, dealing with Dublin’s life and Dubliners’ behaviour. In the same year, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man started to be serialised in the London magazine The Egoist. It appeared in a full book version in 1916. A Portrait is a semi-autobiographical novel which tells the life of an artist from his childhood to his adult age and his attempt to leave Dublin for good. 1915 Moving to Zürich During the war, Joyce and his family decided to move to Zürich looking for a better life. Here, their financial situation improved. Joyce started to join literary circles, where he met influential American writers like Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. 1918 Exiles This is the only theatre play written by Joyce and influenced by the Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen. 1920 Moving to Paris Persuaded by Ezra Pound, Joyce changed city again and returned to Paris, where he spent some serene years despite the fact that his eyesight was worsening. 1922 Ulysses It is Joyce’s masterpiece. The novel reproduces the structure of Homer’s Odyssey, telling the story of Leopold Bloom, a modern Ulysses who wanders through the city of Dublin on a single day. First serialised in the American magazine Little Review, it was published as a book in Paris and only some years later in America and Britain, as the novel was considered obscene. 1939 Finnegans Wake In 1923 Joyce began to work on Finnegans Wake, which would take seventeen years to be completed. His last work is very complex, and mixes the reality of life with the dream world, «a nightmaze» – as Joyce himself said – and set in only one night. The result is an experimental novel which is difficult to interpret. 1940 Moving back to Zürich Joyce and his family went to Switzerland to escape from war. 1941 Death James Joyce was almost blind and died in Zürich after a medical operation.
