JAMES JOICE His father had been very influenced on him, he supported Parnell, the leader the English that wanted an independent parlament. When P. died, his father abandoned the Irish cause. So the paradox is that he abandoned Dublin but he set all his novel on this city, he considered it like the omphalos of the world. It is the example of a city that doesn’t change anything. He changed many cities during his life. Ulysses was at first published in instalments but this work had to be stopped because it was accused of pornography and ?. so it was published only fourteen years later. Dubliners: he rejected Dublin but he set all his novels there. It is considered as a “transitional novel”  still traditional elements but also very innovatives ones (epiphany, symbols..) The story is narrated by the consciousness of the characters, even if there is also the presence of a narrator, who guide the dialogues and the thoughts of the characters you don’t have a single point of view. He doesn’t used punctuation, all is written like a flowing. He wanted to write a “chapter of the moral history of my country”. A typical element of Joice’s style is that he continued the objective tradition of the modernist literature. The point of view is not given by the author but by the different characters’ point of view  the interiority of characters, the author is invisible. j. is a writer of transition, because we have traditional (he adopted the presence of third person narrator  the narrator guides the description, the narration and the thoughts of characters. An other element of tradition is that there is still a plot) and innovativs elements , in fact he had at the same time a realistic approach (detailed description) and a use of symbols (techniques he adopted, so Epiphany, the using of the stream of consciousness). For what concerns Dublin it is carefully described as a place  importance of the setting in place. Dublin is the back ground for all the story, but we don’t have an exaltation of Dublin, it is ordinary, it reproduce the ordinary life of modern man. The importance of sounds even in the city..? As eliot saind that Dunblin is also the centre of paralisys, characters accept their destiny, they don’t’ have the “forza” to react because of the influence of the family  this is th In Dublin the paralisys there is also in the relationship between people, everything is paralyzed, but not only the will also family ties. This compression viene from the super ego. A good device that he adopted is a linguistic register that changes according to the speaker. Dunbliners is still traditional because the plot is still relevant (not very complicated, but there is), but there isn’t not much action  paralysis Gabriel in the dead embodied this paralysis, between the life of the dead people and the life of the alive ones. ULYSSES Ulysses is the maximum expression of crazyness in litterarture. It is completely extreme: no narrator, no punctuation, no capital letter because when we thought we don’t use punctuation, so he reported thoughts as they are. When j. composed it he said that it would be a puzzle for the English teacher of the following generation. The title immediatle suggezst the link with omer’s text, he used past myth to show the superiority of the past, but while in Eliot the technique consists in take quotation, this technique doesn’t contain quotations but only references  EPIC METHOD. The three main chjaracters of the story are: Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, Molly Bloom. All the novel focuses of just one day, the day when j.’s wife made him understand that she would accept his propousus.
