JANE EYRE (1847) The story Jane Eyre is an orphan who lives with her wealthy relatives, the Reed family. Her aunt doesn't like her, so Jane was sent to Lowood boarding school managed by a cruel man, Mr Brocklehurst. Jane is unhappy and lonely. She becomes friends only with Helen, who, however dies of consumption. After Lowood, Jane becomes a teacher and gets a job as a housekeeper for Adèle, a young French girl, who lives with her tutor Mr Rochester at Thornfield Hall. Here Jane is happy, along with Adèle and the housekeeper, Mrs Fairfax, although Mr. Rochester is often absent and sometimes hears a strange laugh coming from the attic of the house. Rochester is a mysterious man, but Jane is attracted by him. One night, she saves him from a fire in his bedroom. After some time, Rochester tells Jane that he is in love with her and proposes to her. Jane agrees, but the wedding ceremony was interrupted by Richard Mason and a lawyer, who revealed that Rochester was already married to Mason's sister Bertha. Bertha Mason is crazy and lives in the house, locked in the attic. It was Bertha, who set the Mr. Rochester's bed on fire. He claims that when he married Bertha, he didn't know about the insanity in her family. Shocked by this news, Jane leaves Thornfield Hall and becomes a teacher in a small village. One night, Jane imagined hearing Mr. Rochester calling. So she returned to Thornfield to find it burned. Bertha had set fire to the house and she was dead. Mr. Rochester is still alive, but he lost his sight in the fire and is now living alone. Jane and Mr. Rochester reunite and get married. Stylistic features
