The novel tells the story of Jane Eyre, an orphan girl who lives in her aunt’s house, at Gateshead Hall. Her childhood is not easy because her aunt Mrs. Reed and her cousins (Eliza, John and Georgiana) often bully Jane and treat her cruelly. One day, after having a fight with her cousin John, Jane is sent in the “red room”, the room where her uncle Mr. Reed died, the only person who really loved her. At the age of 10, Jane is sent to Lowood, a charity school where girls without parents or family are educated. Life in Lowood is very hard because the food is bad and scarce, rooms are very cold, hygiene is poor, so many people get sick. In Lowood Jane meets Helen and they become best friends, but one day she gets sick and dies of tuberculosis in Jane's arms. Jane grows up, completes her studies and becomes a teacher in Lowood, but at the age of 18, she decides to leave to find a new job and start a new life. She advertises her service as a governess in a newspaper and Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeep of Thornfiled Hall, replies to her advertisement and hires her. Jane becomes the teacher of Adèle Varens, a French girl. One day, Jane helps a horseman because the horse slips on ice and throws him and soon she discovers that this man is Mr. Rochester, the owner of Thornfield Hall. After this episode, they begin to know each other, they spend a lot of evenings together and fall in love. Inside this big house, Jane often hears strange sounds and screams coming from the upper floors and one day Mr. Rochester's room gets burnt by a mysterious fire, but Jane saves him. Later Jane has to come back to Gateshead because her aunt Mrs. Reed is sick. Before she dies, she confesses to Jane that she lied to her, hiding a letter from Jane's paternal uncle, Mr. John Eyre, in which he asks Jane to live with him and be his heir. One month later she returns to Thornfield. Jane thinks about the presumed marriage between Mrs. Rochester and Mrs. Ingram. She feels jealous and confess her love for Mr. Rochester and he asks Jane to marry him. During the wedding, a lawyer declares that he can't marry because he already has a wife, Bertha Mason. Mr. Rochester admits the truth and explains that he was cheated by his father to marry her.
