An overview of the life and works of john milton, an influential english poet and writer. Born in a wealthy puritan family in london, milton displayed his poetic abilities with his first famous work, l'allegro e il penseroso, in 1632. He then embarked on a two-year european tour to complete his education and returned to london to become a successful prose polemist and writer of treatises. Milton's personal experiences, including a failed marriage, led him to advocate for divorce. His collected works were published in 1645, and during the english civil war, he supported cromwell's republican cause. After cromwell's death, milton entered a third phase of his literary production, during which he wrote his best-known works, including paradise lost, paradise regained, and samson agonistes.
