Brought up ( cresciuto) by an uncle after his parents died. 1886 he become a British citizen He achieved a Master Mariner Qualification ( qualifica da comandante)and the same year, in 1886 he become a British citizen. The contact with sea developed his passion for it. His career His career as a seaman put him in contact with different social classes. His task ( compito) and experimentation His aim ( scopo) was to explore the meaning ( significato) of human conditions. His characters are always solitary figures, with no roots ( radici) and an uncertain future. In general they are seen externally through the mind of others or through their actions. Exotic settings He set ( ambient) his novels at sea or in exotic places. These were the places that he knew well and where he could isolate his characters. His various narrative techniques He didn’t use the chronological sequence but used the time shift ( spostamento del tempo) to create the illusion of life lived by different people. He used the 1st person narration, journals and letters. He used several ( molti9 points of view. Individual Consciousness He shows a man who is confident ( fiducioso) when is set in an organized society, but this confidence fails ( si perde) when man is lonely and surrounded by wild and hostile background. He stated that reality is the construction of individual consciousness and self-control. “Heart of Darkness” His idea of Colonization His famous novel who tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who is sailing river Congo in Africa, involved (impegnato) in the ivory trade ( commercio dell’avorio) and faces the reality of colonization. Here we see the destruction brought ( portata) by the white man who justify his actions as a way to civilize the natives. Here Conrad shows how the civilized man can become worst than savages when is no more subjected to the rules imposed by the society that he has left. “Heart of Darkness” As a journey in search of the self Heart of Darkness meant ( intesa) as the heart of the Black Africa, but also meant as the journey into the mistery of the self. Here Marlow meets Kurz, another sailor who was there to commerce in ivory ( avorio), a sort of idol for the natives. Marlow is fascinated by him and thinks that Kurz can tell him things about himself that he doesn’t know. Kurz becomes mad and dies, Marlow was saved because understands that it is not possible to penetrate the surface of reality and does not transgress the limits and comes back without fully understand his experience.
