JOYCE In the moment he was living there were changes in society. In fact Eliot was influenced by Joyce and his use of impersonality. Important to understand is also the concept of psychic and psychology because Freud write the innovation of the dreams and said that there are feelings and ideas that are beyond the surface of reality, so in our dreams we can also discoverer our secret ideas. Joyce was influenced by Freud but there are also 2 other philosopher that developed the concept of time. We have internal time: is what we are living directly so our thought our ideas, and what’s happening inside our soul ;external time: is for example the hour and the fact that are happening. They are William James and Bergson. James said that the time can’t be divide in hours, minute but is like a flow and we have the so called stream of consciousness: our ideas flow in our minds and Bergson developed the concept of duration that will be taken by Virginia Woolf in the moments of being. Joyce is a modern modelist writer he use the technique interior monologue and he prefers the direct interior monologue that use the direct presentation of thought and ideas and there are lack of punctuation and lack of chronological order and formal order. He was born in Dublin and Dublin is an important point in his literature and the centre of expression. He studied in a Jesuit collage so his formation is catholic and in his novel he criticized the catholic education and the restriction given by religion. He graduated in languages and probably he knew 17 languages. He wanted to give his education and European band so he was not interested in the irish question, he believed that only Europe could give the right dimension also to political and social issues in Dublin. He wanted to describe an ordinary Dublin, ordinary character in an ordinary language but in Dubliners he use a classical description and there is not a a particular plot while in Ulysses we have a different literature approach. He married Nora Barnacle and they had they first date on 16th June that is important because it will became ‘Bloomsday’ of Ulysses that is the moment when Leopold Bloom started his wondering. He travelled in France and in Italy were he met Italo Svevo and give him English lessons (in Trieste there is a statue of Joyce). After that he established in Switzerland where he died. His way of writing wasn’t at first appreciated and the scenes in Ulysses were considered obscene and in fact he was published in France in 1922. DUBLINERS It consist of 15 stories divided in 4 section: childhood , adolescence, mature life and public life. He wanted to show the religious, political, cultural and social effects of lives of Dubliners in fact Dublin is the centre of paralysis. THE DEAD: the protagonist is Gabriel Conroy, the plot is not difficult. Is the last story and is considered an anticipation of the technique he use in Ulysses. Gabriel was in Christmas dinner with his wife Gretta. He was doing a speech for his relatives and he was satisfied for his speech. Gabriel is self confident. They are coming back to the hotel and while gretta was on the stairs she hear a sons and stops and with the sons she remember her first love that probably died for her, his name was Michael. Gretta had the so called epiphany, is a christian word to indicate the revelation that is when the character is aware of a particular event. In the hotel Gretta tall the story of her past lover to Gabriel and fall the same. And in that moment Gabriel has his personal epiphany and realized that gretta never loved him. he goes to the window and sees that it is snowing, snow recovers all and represent paralysis he can’t change this situation. The snow also represent the burial fo the death. The use of the name are important In Joyce. The name Michael and Gabriel are refer to his catholic education. EVELINE : she had a very sad life, and she feels alone because his father was an alcool addicted and her mother died. She was in love with Franck and they plan to run away together. There is a scene where she is near the window and made an interior monologue thinking of a future life with Franck. She hear a sons coming from the street and from this she remember the last moment of life of her mother and she remember that she promise to her mother to never leave the family, so there is her epiphany. In the last scene Franck is waiting her at the station but she was paralyzed because she cants change her life. Joyce for this novel was accused to be a little imprecized because when Eveline remember the las worlds of there mother, her mother seems to speak in Gaelic in reality a woman of that age, in that time and in that social level is not proper that she knew Gaelic. In reality Joyce uses his works also to work on the language. In his style Joyce didn’t want to show a moralizing effect, the structure seem traditional but rich of symbolism and the writer is impersonal, is outside the description. ULYSSES Master piece of Joyce. He choose this title because he was influenced by Eliot, in fact he exalted the classical culture and use this technique to use ancient heroes and to compare it with modern heroes. Element in common between Odyssey and Ulysses is the journey. The protagonist is Leopold Bloom and he is wondering in Dublin, during this he meet a writer Steven Dedalus (that was an ancient surname) who is searching new house. They became friends and decide to go to a brothel and they get drunk. At the same time Molly, Leopold wife, her name indicate a sexual freedom and she was waiting for her lover. In her description were accused of obscenity. There are 3 important character: Leopold, Steven and Molly. Leopold represent Ulysses, the hero of the story and the things in common is the wondering. Steven is compared to Telemachus that is Ulysses father. Steven is considered like a son for Leopold and Leopold offered him his personal house. Telemachus lives alone with his mother and suitors, then leaves home to look for news about his father and is helped by king Nestor. Molly represent Penelope but in reality she was flight full, during the day it wove and at night it unstitched so when Leopold is at work, Molly meets her lover. Ulysses represent the classical hero, intelligent, strong, clever that was able to face difficulties while Leopold is the modern hero, Joyce want to show they have to face the same problems but they way of living are different and didn’t have the same feature. he has the same vitality as a hero but he is not. There is the metaphor of water; there is the theme of sheep wreck. Ulysses made journey in the sea and shipwrecked different time, in Leopold is metaphorical, is the internal sea and also the internal stream of conscious that is like a river and flows images , feeling and difficulties. In Joyce the use of verbs is not precise. There are passage of time and the free association of ideas, imagine and feeling but his principal characteristic in impersonality he is outside the character he describes. There are also preassociation in fact if you read ulysses you can find some different association.
