Joyce set the novel Ulysses in the day wich he met is wife, he had a controversial relationship with Dublin, he left the city when he was 22 and he goes in Paris Rome and Trieste. During the Italian period he became friend of Italo svevo Setting is very important, it is usually Ireland, Dublin, and he talk about Dublin in a so realistic way, that people thinks that Dublin was visiting only for his book  He love and hate Dublin, he hated the way to live religion in Dublin, he rebelled against the catholic curch, he considered this fear cu instrusive, he tink that curch influenced life He wanted to analize the people living in Dublin from different points of view, he wanted also to explore the caracrhers, in Eveline the reader can enter the mind of the protagonist. Time is now perceived as subjective, is perceived the time living by the protagonist. But even if he explore this caracrher he want to render life as objective as possible, so he describe life in a realistic way. He had a new idea of artist now, the role of the artist changed and now the artist feels a sense of isolation from society.  Joyce’s style develop on his art, in Dubliners for example he uses realism because he describes Dublin and the people, environments in a realistic way, in order to make the reader understand everything. He use also a prose of very rules, there are also very different point of view, in Eveline for example we have the pint of view of the caracther. Considering the 15 story after Joyce himself divide stories in 2 different groups  He use the free direct speech that is different from the interior monologue It means that the reader can understand directly the thoughts of the protagonist  Dubliners molto realistici narratore prima persona free direct speech e non c’è il monologo interiore quindi i Dubliners sono una sorta di opera dove doveva ancora imparare  Negli ulisses he uses interiore monologue
