EDUCATION: THE NEW CHALLENGE Education is a teaching and learning system aiming to socialize individuals and maximize their development. Education is very important within society. It’s the basis for the prolongation of culture, for the instruction of individuals, for the evolution of society and for other purposes. The right to education in the United Kingdom is provided for in Article 2 of the Human Rights Act 1998. Unfortunately, before 1998 things were different. In early Victorian Britain, many children did not go to school as children do today. School had not yet become compulsory. In Victorian era progress and political stability coexisted with poverty and injustice. There was general agreement on the virtues of asserting a social status, increasing emphasis was placed on education. These things were respectable. However, respectability was a mixture of morality and hypocrisy, since the unpleasant aspects of the society were hidden under outward respectability. Child labour was common and very young children were employed at minimum wages in dangerous jobs like chimney sweeping and in the coal mines. Destitute children often turned to crime. Author like Charles Dickens, who personally began working at the age of 12, denounces this situation in his works. His works are instrument of social critic. Dickens intended Oliver Twist to show the system’s treatment of an innocent child born and raised in the workhouse system. In Hard Times he denounces the gap between the rich and the poor. By the late 1860s, lots more voluntary schools had been opened. Many working-class children now went to school for some of their childhood. Finally, in 1870, the government passed an Education Act to deal with the education of Britain’s young generation Today, I feel lucky to have had the chance to go to school. But the most incredible thing is that even in this period so difficult for everyone, while everything stopped, education kept going. So, I feel even luckier to have had the possibility of taking lessons also during this time. Surely it was difficult to organize the distance learning, but thanks to it I felt less alone. No one should take education for granted because it is a precious asset and we should be thankful for it.
