THE EDWARDIAN ERA The Edwardian era goes from 1901 to 1914 and it's the beginning of a new century In 1901 there is the death of Queen Victoria and a new era with a new king started This is the Edwardian age because it's the period in which Victoria's son, Edward VII, takes the power. His reign was short compared to his mother's which was the longest that England had before queen Elizabeth II This is a period of peace and prosperity, the golden age of twenties We have a technological and architectural prosperity → enlightenment and architecture flourished and England houses were modernized, moreover there is the introduction of the first telephone system and some examples of mass-produced recorded music appeared It was an innovative period from many points of view: innovation was not limited to industry but also an innovation in other fields such as art and literature. England found the influence of French "belle époque" English referred to the rest of Europe as "the continent" because they were a island There are other aspects that were obscure: Edward sometimes was not able to compensate for the economic problems of the country and the military growth was insufficient compared to the American and German ones. At the death of Edward his reign was taken by his son George, his reign was longer but characterized by the First World War AGE OF TROUBLES Samuel Hynes, an American author, defined this period "leisurely time when women work picture hats and didn't vote when the rich weren't ashamed to live conspicuously and the sun really never set on the British flag" → he says that this is a period of prosperity and wellness and he says that Britain was colonizing all over the world becoming a colonial country. But in reality this was not the truth because this is the period of suffragettes who were fighting for their rights and English people used violence over colonized people The fact that Britain was colonizing a lot of countries and this mean that they were fighting for maintaining their power, so "the new imperialism" asked a strong use of violence BOER WAR An important and dramatic event is due to the Boer War (1899-1902): they were a dutch colony and the war was against them and the British government which wanted to keep the power over the countries in South Africa. South Africa was important for trading and getting raw materials → this was a place of prosperity and wealth The Boer War for England was called "the war of independence" by boers, but by all the other countries it was considered as an "international war". The causes of the second Boer war were: 1) the strategic ambitions of British imperialism 2) South Africa was crucial for England for trade and raw materials 3) this were the consequences of the first Boer war in 1880-81 4) foreigners weren't equal treated in Boer states 5) the British were considered superior. Boer women, children and men that couldn’t be used for work were sent by British forces to concentration camps. SUFFRAGETTES It's a movement that began in a period of great changes and represents the conditions of women who were organizing to get their rights The first movement was darken by the second movement led by Emmeline Pankhurst The first movement started in 1867 in England and organised campaigns to get the right to vote In 1897 Millicent founded the national union of women's suffragettes society But in 1903 Pankhurst founded a new movement in which violence was considered one of the most important ways to be noticed, she knew what to do to get independence → the motto of the movement was "deeds not words".
