Her reign lasted for almost 64 years and was an "age of reform". Some reforms were: 1. The First Reform Act had transferred voting privileges from small districts to large industrial cities, such as Birmingham and Manchester. 2. The Factory Act had prevented children between the ages of 9 and 13 from being employed more than 48 hours a week. no one between 13 and 18 could work more than 72 hours a week. 3. The Poor Law Amendment Act had reformed the old Poor Laws (Elizabeth I). Queen Victoria reigned constitutionally, avoiding the European revolution of 1848. She married Prince Albert and they had 9 children. He organized the "Great Exhibition", where he built the cristal palace in Hide Park, to demonstrate the greatness of England. the queen awarded him the title of Prince Consort, and when he died of typhus, she spent 10 years in mourning. After, Queen Victoria was given the title of "Empress of India". India was economically important and necessary for the control of Asia. The Victorian age ended with her death in 1901. It was also a period of contradictions ("Victorian compromise"), in which there was poverty, injustice, disease and crime. The death rate was high and the working conditions were bad. The family was patriarchal and the woman raised the children and ran the house. single women with a child were called "fallen women". Sexuality was repressed and also language and nudity in art. There was a return to gothic and classicism in art, while believing in God but also in progress and science. the most widely read book was the bible. Periodicals are published and novels were read within the family. The novelists represented society and the main representative was Charles Dickens, along with Darwin's theories and "Naturalism". The company's dissatisfied writers were Hardy, Stevenson, and Oscar Wilde. The women couldn’t wrote and they used male pseudonyms. George Eliot is the male pseudonym of Mary Evans. the 2 most famous political parties of the time were the Liberal Party, with the former Whigs led by Gladstone and the Conservative Party, with the Tories, led by Disraeli. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee = Elizabeth's reign will turn 70
