The wall was built only 12 years later. On the night of 12-13 August 1961, the communist regime separated the city of Berlin. This border was called the "Iron Curtain", which divided the countries under Soviet influence from those under Western influence. The main reason was to block the displacement of citizens from Berlin to the western territories. The communist regime wanted to avoid the loss of manpower and "brains". The wall was 155 km long and 3 meters high, it was called the Wall of Shame by the mayor of West Berlin, Willy Brandt. It represented a symbol of death for all those people who tried to cross it. 600 people died between 1961 and 1968, only after 28 years due to a misunderstanding occurred the fall of this wall. Due to numerous protests in 1989, citizens forced the East German government, headed by Egon Krenz, to relax border controls. The decision was to issue a regulation concerning the travel of citizens. But, spokesman Gunter Schabowski, during the ill-formed press conference of November 9, 1989, announced that all Berliners would be able to cross the border immediately. All the population then presented themselves before the wall and it was impossible for the uninformed army to contain the mass. So finally the borders opened and in the following weeks thousands of Berliners demolished that wall. On October 3, 1990, the reunification of Germany was sealed, exactly one year after the fall of the last symbol of the Cold War. Last year, 9 November was the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Many people who attended that event stress the importance of remembering who fought and who hoped this would happen. The world was divided in two, the fall brought great hope to the world, especially to the families who in the postwar period found themselves divided. I think that a political purpose cannot in any way affect the division of a mother and a child, breaking up their relationships and separating them for many years. A child needs a mother to grow up, to be followed as a point of reference in life but especially in times of difficulty. The fall of the Berlin Wall is not about the victory of capitalism or communism, but the victory of the people’s power over politics. Politics should protect the freedom of a people, not act against them to safeguard their interests.
