Tavistock Square 52 E1W London GB 28 February 1941 Via Compagnia dei Trasporti 10A 39051 Bolzano IT Dear Mrs Woolf, you don't know me, my name is Margaret Bio and I am a former working class suffragette. I am writing this letter to tell you how your books have inspired and sometimes encouraged me in this war for rights. Your books have always helped me to remember what the real goals were that we women should be pursuing (freedom: to speak, to vote, not to be seen only as objects belonging to a man, etc.). When I wasn't yet part of the suffragette movement I happened to read her essay 'Shakespeare's sister', in secret because my parents didn't want me to read books that had anything to do with feminism, and I think I had a moment of being. I certainly saw myself very much in the situation of Shakespeare's sister, even though we're from two different social classes, we were both denied the opportunity to study and get an education, we were both forced into a marriage we didn't want, and that's when I had my moment of being. That's when I realised that I could change my reality, unlike Shakespeare's sister, so I ran away from home before I got married and joined the suffragette movement in London. The women I met in the movement were like the women in your stories: strong, independent and unafraid to be seen for who they are. Thanks to her and what she wrote I found my place in the world and even though I am no longer a suffragette I will certainly not stop fighting for women's rights now, so thank you Mrs Virginia Woolf for what you have done for us women. Sincerely yours, Margherita Bio
