JAMES JOYCE LIFE AND WORKS - James Joyce was born in Dublin and he is the eldest of ten children. - He was educated at Jesuit schools and he studied modern language at University College in Dublin. - He had no interest in Irishness, he didn’t share the Irish people's ideas and he felt suffocated. - He went to Paris where he started to write but he had to come back to Dublin because of the illness of his mother. - In 1904 he met Nora Barnacle and they fell in love. They had their first day on 16th June which is the Bloom’s day of Ulysses. - In 1905 the couple went to Trieste and Joyce started to teach English. They had two children and they got married. - Joyce was in trouble with publishers and printers because of obscene elements in his prose. - He published Dubliners, a collection of short stories about Dublin and its life. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man which is a semi-autobiographical novel. - He moved to Zurich with his family. Here he published Ulysses in a review but it was suspended on charge of obscenity. It was censored in America and England but published in France, in Paris in 1922. - He died after an intestinal operation and he was buried in Zurich. He died in the same year of the suicide of Virginia Woolf. - Joyce left Ireland but in reality he never did because he always wrote about Dublin. THE REBELLION AGAINST THE CHURCH His hostility towards the Church was the revolt of the artist-heretic against the official doctrine, it is the struggle between the aesthetic-eretic and a provincial church. The conflict is painful like between a son and his parents linked to the quest for his artistic potential. STYLE - Joyce is influenced by the french symbolists, he believed in the impersonality of the artist. - The task of the artist is to render life objectively in order to give back to the readers a true image of it. This led to the isolation of the artist from society. - Joyce used different points of view and narrative techniques appropriate to the characters portrayed. - He used realism and disciplined prose and the interior monologue and the extreme interior monologue. Language becomes a form of successions of words without paragraphs, punctuation or grammatical connections. - He uses the subjective time that depends on feelings to show the inner world of his characters. - He wanted to use an objective view of life. - He feels oppressed from society because his works were rejected. ULYSSES - It has been published in installments and it is made of 18 chapters. - Dublin is very well described in all his details. - It does not have a precise plot but it is the story of 3 characters and the reader does a voyage in their psychology and mind. The 3 characters are the parody of the epic characters of The Odyssey, so a lot of interactions and scenes are bizarre, exaggerated and parodized.
