THE VICTORIAN AGE The Victorian age is the period between 1837, the year of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne, and 1901, the year of her death. The Victorian age is one of the periods that has most fascinated the contemporary world, it was an age of reforms, political stability and progress but there was also misery and injustice. The complexity of Victorian society was told by writers, such as Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy, who portrayed the difficulties and contradictions of the English world of the time. The key dates of the Victorian age are: • 1837: Queen Victoria ascends the throne; • 1838: with the People's Charter, social reforms and male suffrage are requested • 1840: Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Saxony is a region of Germany. Therefore, from this moment, England is linked to Germany and this continues to this day. In fact, Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, was descended from parents belonging to a German royal house. • 1845: In Ireland there was an epidemic of downy mildew which hit the potato plantations causing a crisis. Many Irish families migrated to America, such as the Kennedy family, great- grandparents of the future president John Fitzgerald Kennedy. • 1851: there was the Great International Fair. It was held in London because it was the capital of the British Empire, the greatest power of the time. • 1859: Charles Darwin's work "On Origins and Species" was published. Charles Darwin Changes some important cultural ideas. Before him, it was believed that the world was created by God. After Darwin, everything changed. Darwin said that the world and living beings were not created by God, their life on earth originated from evolution. Humans were no longer the first creature on earth and were not the image of God. Until Darwin it was believed that the earth was only six thousand years old. With Darwin it was understood that the earth was very very ancied. Thanks to Darwin, geology and biology were born. • 1869: the Suez Canal, located between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, was opened to connect the Mediterranean and Indian Seas. Giuseppe Verdi was also invited for the inauguration and wrote "A Ida" for the occasion. In addition, railroads were built to connect the American East and West. • 1870: the Education Act was approved, which laid the foundations for elementary teaching. • 1901: Queen Victoria I dies.
