The story of Billy Eliot is set during the mid-80s, and centres on the 11-year-old Billy Elliot who loves to dance and his hope is to become a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his widowed father Jackie, older brother Tony and his invalid Nan who also once wished to be a professional dancer. Both Jackie and Tony are coal miners and not interested in dancing. The father takes Billy to the Sports Centre to learn boxing like his father's dad, but Billy does not like the sport. He then sees a ballet class that is using the gym temporarily. Unknown to Billy's father, he joins the ballet class. When the father discovers this after the boxing coach mentions Billy's absence, he forbids Billy to take any more ballet. But, Billy is too passionate about dancing so with the dance teacher’s help he continues with the dance lessons. The teacher believes Billy is talented enough to study at the Royal Ballet School in London, but Tony has problems with the police and Billy misses the audition for the school. The dad and Tony are scared that Billy will be considered strange and are terribly angry of him and that he wants to become a professional ballet dancer. But when the dad sees Billy dancing in the gym he realises his son has a gift. He decides he will do whatever it takes to help Billy realise his dream but his brother is not fine with it. Friends and other coal miners help raise money for Bill so that he can go to London for another audition for the Royal Ballet School. Billy is very nervous, but he performs well. Then he punches another boy in an unprovoked attack at the audition, and the review board does not like it. However, as a final question, they ask him what it feels like when he's dancing and Billy responds, "like electricity." Billy returns home with his father. Sometime later, he receives a letter accepting him to the Royal Ballet School, and he leaves his family to go there and after years of training Billy becomes a professional dancer. I like this story very much because Billy managed to realize his dream,it’s also nice to see that Billy’s father finally understood and supported him. I think that Billy is a great character.
