VIRGINIA WOLF Born/Died : 1882/1941 Place : London LIFE:  grew up in a literary and intellectual atmosphere  After her mother's death, Virginia went through a long period of depression and began to show the first signs of the mental illness that characterized her entire life.  suffred from nervous breekdowns  married Leonard Woolf but had a relationship with a woman ( Vita Sackville West)  Belonged to the Bloomsbury group ( group of intellectuals disregarding traditional morality and artistic conventions)  In 1917 she founded a publishing house with her husband, the Hogarth Press  Meanwhile, mental disorders continued to haunt the writer who was always overwhelmed by crises of anxiety and insecurity  The Second World War worsened her fears, she began to hear voices in her head and fearing to go mad she chose the only possible path for her: "death by water" by drowning in the River Ouse (Sussex) near her house in 1941. -Virginia Woolf, like James Joyce and other contemporaries, adopted the new narrative techniques that characterized the first decades of the 20th century. The writer was convinced that the narration of events in chronological order was now a superficial and imperfect way to present her life. Virginia Woolf was interested in giving a voice to the inner world of man, whose consciousness was conceived as a continuous stream of emotions and impressions. -The omniscient narrator disappears and the point of view moves into the minds of the characters, where everything flows as a continuous flow and is rendered through flashbacks, associations of ideas, impressions and temporary emotions. -Woolf explored many typical themes of the modernist novel such as anxiety, crisis and communication difficulties, but she also dealt with themes very close to her such as loneliness, the distinction between dream and reality, mental illness and the prejudices towards women that prevented them from expressing your identity.
