LINGUA INGLESE ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY HOW THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN AFFECTED YOUNG PEOPLE INTRODUCTION This report will comment on the effects that coronavirus lockdown brought about to young people’s lives. There is a widespread agreement that coronavirus strongly affected several aspects of all human beings who experienced it, from education to physical and mental health. In the following report we will comprehend, in particular, how it impacted the lives of the youngest generation in the northern area of Italy. YOUNG PEOPLE AND EDUCATION DURING THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN During coronavirus lockdown young people were obliged to stay at home and a new form of teaching arose. Distance teaching replaced the traditional form, above all during the first months of the pandemic, and the students had to adapt to it rapidly. But how did students respond to this change? Recent research indicates that the sense of commitment and the seriousness towards school decreased in a great part of young people, due to the lack of motivation. As a mat- ter of fact, distance learning seemed to have made easier school and the youngest often took it for granted. Nevertheless, young people told us about their sufferance caused by the lack of social re- lationship, linked to the manner through which this aspect impacted on their mental health. STUDENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH DURING THE CONFINEMENT It is common knowledge that the lockdown affected the mental health of people, indeed more and more cases of mental diseases developed during the past two years. Being the aim of this report an evaluation of the consequences of the lockdown on young people, we have to underline the noticeable amount of cases of depression or sense of loneliness in the youngest. Due to the lockdown, people lost real communication between each other, therefore social relationships weakened. The result was young people who had to face this sense of isolation, so that they tried to find ways to contrast it, such as group calls with friends or relatives. Nonetheless, the majority agreed that these previous alternatives could not replace in-person relationships and they will never succeed in doing so. RECOMMENDATIONS In conclusion, we can underline that coronavirus lockdown had significant effects on the lives of people who experienced it. It provoked a radical change in the world from different points of view; in spite of this, we can consider it as a way to react if a similar situation oc- curs in the future. As a matter of fact, we will know that new forms of teaching can exist and we learnt that real relationships have to be cultivated and preserved. Therefore, from a human point of view, we ought to have learnt an important lesson, that is appreciating what we have and be grateful every day of being in health. I hope that the recommendations outlined in this report will receive your serious considera- tion.
