THE FINAL FRONTIER’ These are the first words of the introduction to one of television’s most popular space series ever. Star Trek. Set in the 23rd century, Star Trek follows the adventures of the starship Enterprise and her crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk and his First Officer Mr Spock. The introduction goes on to state the purpose of the starship’s journey: Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series was broadcast from September 1966 to June 1969. At first the show was not successful and it was cancelled by NBC after its third season. However, during reruns of the series a cult following developed and fan clubs were set up world-wide. Fans coined the term ‘Trekkies’ to describe themselves and an entire subculture grew up around the show. In the Star Trek universe mankind developed spaceships that could travel faster than light. Late in the 21st century, humans joined with other species in the galaxy to form the United Federation of Planets. Star Trek stories usually depicted the adventures of humans and alien beings who served in the Federation’s Starfleet. Surprisingly, the show also reflected a number of cultural issues of the period in which it was made including racism, human rights, sexism and the role of technology. The three main characters were Kirk, Spock and Mc Coy and in many of the stories the three men clashed, Kirk had a passionate and often aggressive character, Spock was coolly logical and McCoy was sarcastic but always compassionate. McCoy and Spock hardly ever agreed on the solution to a problem and their frequent arguments became very popular with viewers. The original actors, who had been largely unknown before the show, became celebrities, but after the episodes were broadcast, they found themselves type-cast because of their roles. Since the first series of 80 episodes, now referred to as ‘The Original Series’, five more series of Star Trek have been broadcast and eleven feature films have been made. Despite a shaky start, Star Trek has become one of the longest-running and most profitable TV series ever shown on television and phases such as ‘ Beam me up Scotty’, (transport me back to the ship i.e. get me out of here) have entered the English language. From “We’re having a child” to “We’re getting divorced.” Just two of the major life events that an average couple may experience. Events like these are often described as life-changing, but recent research seems to suggest otherwise. A team of psychologists and economists recently published a study that suggests both the positive and negative feelings that result from life events are relatively short-lived. So, the joy experienced when you are first married tends to fade over time due to a process called “adaptation”. You simply get used to the new set of circumstances. Similarly bad experiences like getting divorced or getting the sack don’t seem to affect your long-term satisfaction with life. Put basically, your overall level of happiness remains more or less constant throughout your adult life. The research team surveyed thousands of people in Germany over a period of 20 years. The study assessed their levels of happiness before and after one of six life events: getting married, having a child, getting divorced, becoming widowed, losing your job, and being laid off. While most of these events had a strong effect on happiness at the time they took place, the positive or negative feelings faded relatively quickly. Interestingly, only unemployment had a longer detrimental effect. So what do we make of this idea of adaptation? When it comes to money, I can see it makes some sense. No matter how much money any one of us has, we quickly get used to the lifestyle that it provides. And we’ve all heard of lottery winners who, after the initial spending sprees, come back down to earth. Having extra money is nice but you only have to look at the problems experienced by some of today’s celebrities to know it doesn’t bring you lasting happiness. It’s when we think about relationships that I start to query the research. Sure, a couple that have been married for years aren’t going to wake up each morning and feel the same joy as they did on their wedding day. But even if they have got used to being married, they could still go on to experience greater levels of happiness in the future. It’s the same with children. Perhaps most of the people who were surveyed had children of school age, which is generally recognized as a difficult stage in family life. Once these children are grown up, they could become a source of renewed happiness to their parents. The idea of adaptation seems to suggest that you can get used to more less anything. For me, the area of life where it just doesn’t fit is bereavement. I wouldn’t say anyone really gets used to losing someone they love. I only have to look at my own life since my brother passed away. What I could never say is that I’m as happy now as I was before he died. Yes, time is a healer but some things you just never really adapt to. The truth behind body language Non verbal actions can send different – and more genuine – messages than words, discovers Karen Hainsworth. Words convey the messages that we want others to hear, but our bodies may tell a different story. Whether we express our problems to our colleagues with a hunched back and sad, downcast eyes, or our enthusiasm for life with a cheerful spring in our step, our bodies are constantly sending out messages. And understanding these clues that we unavoidably offer each other is an essential part of effective communication. ‘People vary enormously in their ability to detect non-verbal cues,” says Dr. Bull, psychologist at the University of York. “Those who tend to be good at detecting emotions and getting the time right when raising tricky subjects are usually picking up others’ moods through these non-verbal clues,” he says. “But it’s important to be emotionally intelligent when dealing with the real messages that are coming through. There’s little point in being a skilled decoder of subtle signals if your colleagues’ more genuine emotions overwhelm you with anxiety, anger of irritation.” The ability to manipulate your own body language is suggested as an essential skill when it comes to making a good impression. If you’re aiming to communicate interest and enthusiasm, for example, confident body language can help to convey a message that is consistent,” says Dr. Bull. “General facial cues suggesting alertness, while showing that you are listening, can help. And your tone of voice should be lively and interested.” Though we can portray a false emotion to a certain extent, few can fool a skilled observer, who is likely to detect the micro-expressions that we constantly make. We may smile when we are miserable, but a body language expert will know we’re faking it. Genuine smiles use the tiny muscles around the eyes, but a false smile involves only the mouth. It’s not that difficult to modify grosser signals, however. And we can make a good start by developing a level of self-awareness. “It’s important to listen to what our own bodies are doing,” says Dr. Betty Rudd, the chartered counselling psychologist. If you want to give the impression of confidence at work, first recognize how much space you are taking up. “Think about letting go of the tension in your muscles; allow the floor or the chair to take their weight,” says Rudd. “Think of your back spreading out and widening and lengthening.” And she suggests maintaining eye contact with the person you are dealing with, rather than constantly averting your gaze. “These little things can make a huge impact and you will feel more grounded and secure,” she says. Once you become aware of these subtle signs, you increase your power to communicate effectively. When your body is saying the same thing as your words, it shows consistency or congruence and has enormous impact. But people will often use incongruence to get less comfortable information across. “They may say something that makes them sound quite interested in you, but their body language suggests that they are not,” says Bull. “They may feel they cannot come out and say, “I’m not interested”, so what they do is say it through a lukewarm, uninterested non-verbal style.” Decoding the real message can be a tricky business and becomes even more complicated when different cultures begin to mix. But whether that’s the culture of a country or company, you can avoid putting your foot in it by watching others closely and observing the subtleties of non-verbal cues, while noting the unspoken messages that accompany the words.
