Capogrossi Guarna Matteo “Music’s Impact on Society” 1 Capogrossi Guarna Matteo “Music’s Impact on Society” Music is nothing but a mirror reflection of the society in which is created. People within the music express emotions, fears, culture, thoughts and what is going on during their period of life. We can definitely say that music has changed a lot over time, but its impact on the society has remained strong. But how does today’s music affect the society? When we turn on the radio today most likely we are going to listen to one thing only: mainstream music. Usually something upbeat, with some random lyrics and the most common melody in it. I’m not saying that it’s bad music, but is it real music? If we go back in time to the 60s, 70s or 80s we can see how different the conception of music and of an artist was. It was something meaningful, deep, with a purpose, with a message. Artists were used to write their own lyrics, to play more then one instrument and then record it, they sang every word in their song without using any filter (like auto-tune, which was considered an insult back in the day). But don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that today’s music is bad, what I wanna say is that music has changed a lot over the years for sure, and sometimes not for the better. Most of the people don’t realize how powerful music really is and how it affects people. If we take a look at some lyrics from the most popular songs lately, and mostly from the number one genre that has become popular all over the world, which is trap/hip-hop, we can definitely see a lack of depth. How can lyrics like “Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang” or “Bust down Thotiana” or “ I’m in love with the CoCo” affect the society in a good way? Especially since most of the listeners are really young. And why people are not interested anymore in what is going on in the world right now and prefer to use their platforms to promote sex, drugs and alcohol instead of focusing on raising awareness on important issues? Probably because of the desire of money and power. And all of this has a really strong impact on our society, which 2
