Lord Byron - he incarnates the romantic hero idea (he invented the Byronic hero idea) - it is very difficult distinguish the character’s life and Byron’s life Life - at the beginning of his life, he was poor o his mother married a captain, who stole all the money of the family and escaped - when his uncle died, he became Lord (he took the title of his uncle) o he inherited lands, money and Newstead Abbey (gothic) - he had a deformed foot o he was obsessed with it o he forced himself to practise sport activities (his favourite sports were boxing and swimming) - he attended Oxford, a school for noblemen o he had great fun -> he drank a lot, he was a famous lover, he had homosexual experiences (he was bisexual) o his rebel ideas have born  idea of freedom o he began writing poems  1807 -> “hours of idleness” (ore di ozio) - After university he had a grand tour (1809 – 1811) o To explore o To learn (it was a part of education taken in university) o A way to explore sexuality -> he had a relation with the king of Albania o He visits Portugal, Spain, Malta, Greece (realized the great glory of classics) o he wrote  the 2 firsts cantos of “Child Harold”  “pilgrimage” - He came back because his mother, the only figure he had, was dying o He didn’t attend her funerals; he went boxing with one of his servants - He had an overnight success - He became the most important character in the romantic ages - he has a scandal life o he was a free thinker; we can compare him to Percy Shelley o he had a lot of love affairs  Lord Caroline  Caroline Lamb was obsessed by Byron -> when their relation came over, she said that Lord Byron had a double personality  Lady Oxford  His half sister Augusta  A leigh, un incesto  Annabella Milbank  She married Lord Byron because of money  When they went to live together, Lord Byron brought also Augusta - his life was a sort of mystery (we can read his thoughts in the letters) - in 1816 -> self-exile o because of scandals and debts o he went in Europe, in Geneva o he met Shelleys o he felt in love with Mary’s step sister  they had a daughter (Allegra)
