He was the son of Catherine Gordon, a high-born Scot, and Captain John Byron. • Little George's childhood was very unhappy, both for a physical malformation (he was lame) and for the violent nature of his parents. The child's psychic balance was so compromised that it later resulted in an irrepressible need for transgression. • Byron studied at Harrow and Cambridge where he published his first volume of verse "HOURS OF IDLENESS" and a violent satire "ENGLISH BARDS AND SCOTTISH REVIEWERS", to react to a harsh criticism of an Irish newspaper against his poems. • In 1809 he took his birth seat in the House of Lords; despite this he took radical attitudes, defending for example the movement of the Luddites, workers who destroyed the machines because they saw the cause of unemployment. • Like every other young aristocrat of the time, Lord Byron set off on the Grand Tour through Europe, then considered an indispensable crowning glory for the education of a young nobleman. He visited the Iberian peninsula, Greece, the Orient. • In 1823 he enthusiastically accepted the appointment of the committee for the independence of Greece, which had then risen against Turkish rule. He went to Greece, but died in April 1824 in Missolonghi of rheumatic fever
