George Gordon Byron was born in London in 1788, he was an aristocratic and his life and poetry embodied the romantic spirit. However, as a student at cambridge university, he drank, gambled, made brilliant conversation and forced himself to become skilled at sports. He began to write poetry in 1807 and published the hours the hours of idleness. In1809 he set his grand tour where he gathered experiences anf being able to write childe harold’pilgrame and beacame a literary and social celebrity. His reputation increaed even more when he published a series of verse narratives given their exotic settings and the description of foreign customs. In 1815 Byron married Annabella Milkbanke but the marriage collapsed a year later because of byron’s incestous relationship with his half-sister. Surrounded by scandal and debt, he left england in 1816. He met Percy and Mary Shelley, he began the poet the prisoner of chillon and started Manfred. He moved to venice and was fascinated by the carbonari, a group of conspirators. He than joined other british radical exiles, such as Shelley, and published a political journal. He joined greeks in preparing a rivolt against turks. He was made commander in chief and died in 1824, struck by a severe fever. With his life and works Byron popularised the “byronic hero”, a passionate, moody, restless and mysterious man, who hides some horrible sin or secret in his past. He’s characterised by proud individualism and the rejection of the conventional moral rules of society. He is an out sider, isolated and attractive at the same time. He is of noble birth, but wild and rough in his manners; his looks are hard but handsome, he has great sensibility to nature and beauty, but he has grown bored with excesses and excitements of the world. Women cannot resist him, but he refuses their love while men either admire or envy him. This blend of hidden suffering, rebelliousness and eroticism was irerestible in Byron’age.
