Ulysses Published in 1922, is the most outstanding illustration of the stream of consciousness technique in the novel. It is the story of a day, in Dublin from early in the morning of June 16, 1904 until about 2.30 the following morning. 1. ULYSSES The action in Joyce's novel takes place in Dublin, Ireland, and the shore east of Dublin on the Irish Sea. Joyce chose June 16 as the date for most of the action in the novel as a kind of commemoration of the day when he met his lover, Nora Barnacle. 2. SETTING The structure of Ulysses parallels symbolically the structure of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. In both works, a man goes on a journey, encountering a variety of people and situations along the way. However, the journey in Homer’s work lasts ten years, whereas the journey in Joyce’s work lasts about 18½ hours. The main characters in Ulysses also parallel the main characters in The Odyssey. 3. STRUCTURE The author writes in third-person point of view with frequent use of allusions, symbols, literary archetypes, and the stream-of-consciousness technique. Joyce also uses numerous sentences and phrases from Latin, French, German, Spanish, Russian (transliterated), Italian, and other languages. Another technique he uses is to combine two words into one to create a single adjective and sometimes a noun. 5. Style and Technique •The expression of the universal in the particular: the people of Dublin become symbols of humanity. •The journey: like the Odyssey, the novel deals with a journey away from and then back home, after having symbolically faced death. •The quest: the journey is also a quest symbolizing human life, so suffering, falling, raising again. •Incommunicability: Leopold and Molly do not communicate any more; Leopold and Stephen are too tired to communicate when they come home. •The relationship between the artist and the common man: they exist in mutual need, as the artist needs the common man as material for his work, the common man needs the artist to raise him from his everyday life In stream of consciousness, an author portrays a character’s continuing “stream" of thoughts as they occur, regardless of whether they make sense or whether the next thought in a sequence relates to the previous thought. These thought portrayals expose a character’s memories, fantasies, apprehensions, fixations, ambitions, rational and irrational ideas, and so on. 6. Stream of Consciousness 4. themes Characters and events arranged around Homeric model: •Leopold Bloom: he represents Common Man, and so humanity, he’s a parody of the wandering Ulysses of the Odyssey and also a parody of the wandering Jew. •Molly Bloom: she represents the flesh, as she’s totally dependent on her sensuality, and stands ironically for Penelope. •Stephen Dedalus: he represents every young man in the search of maturity, but also the alienated artist, and stands for Telemachus, as he is momentarily adopted by Leopold Bloom. 7. the characters Bloomsday is a celebration that takes place both in Dublin and around the world. It celebrates Thursday 16 June 1904. During this celebration, Bloom’s route through the streets of Dublin is followed by participants in the festival, with readings along the way. This festival goes on for a week. 8. Bloomsday The conversation of the four men in the funeral carriage relates to several motifs in Ulysses. For example, Bloom's memories of his father's suicide, thoughts brought on by Mr. Power's rambling comments, reinforce the father-son theme 9. The Funeral The time of narration does not have any link with chronological time. The action takes place in Bloom’s mind, where there is no difference between past , present and future. Some sentences describe the scene from the outside, others reproduce Bloom’s thoughts consequently there are two levels of narration and different points of view: • 1st level of narration: the action is narrated from the outside • 2nd level of narration: thoughts of Leopold Bloom and his point of view.
