In 1979 the Conservative Party won the election and she became the first female Prime Minister in the UK. Under her leadership: - She started a policy of privatization - She closed unprofitable industries - She reduced government spending By 1981 unemployment increased and many Britain industrial were forced bankruptcy, however she refused to abandon her policies. In 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands (in the Atlantic Ocean) which belonged to Britain, so a war started and Britain won it. Thanks to this victory the Conservative Party was re-elected in 1983 but unemployment increased again, especially in Scotland, Wales and northern England. There was a great division between the poverty of the North and the wealth of the South-East. In 1990 there’s the introduction of the “Poll Tax” or “Community Charge”; that is a tax of a portioned, fixed amount per individual in accordance with the census (tassa sulla persona). A peaceful march in London degenerated into serious rioting. This Act caused the fall of Margaret Thatcher. The Poll tax was replaced by the Council tax (with John Major). Mrs Thatcher, so, after 11 years, was obliged to resign, and John Major became Prime Minister. In 1997 the Labour Party won the election and Tony Blair became Prime Minister. In the 1990s Britain was nicknamed “Cool Britannia” thanks to the great success in many fields: like fashion, music, sport, etc.. Margaret Thatcher is a controversial figure, a woman who has shaken the whole of Europe Woolf was born in 1882 in England, and she was a strong woman too, who struggled for her ideas and opinions. A real fighter who fought for the emancipation of women also through her texts, such as “A room of one's own” and “Mrs Dalloway”. She was a femminist and she belonged to Modernism, an artistic current similar (affine) to authors such as Italo Svevo and Kafka. The most used narrative technique is the stream of consciusness, in which character’s thoughs, feelings and emotions are represented in a continuos flow without comments by the author. Virginia Woolf is compared to Joyce (Ulysses) but she expresses the thoughs of her characters in a logical way and her punctuation is conventional. My choice fell on Margaret Thatcher, as I said before, because she is a controversial figure, who loved or hated will remain an indelible mark in history. She has shown that she deserved the office of Prime Minister with determination and ambition, and she has never bowed to anything and no one and has been able to carry forward her ideas and goals. It is, of course, essential to say that she was the first woman to achieve this position in the UK and for me that is a great achievement.
