Her parents believed in the Enlightened power of reason. She eloped to France with poet Percy Shelley. She wrote Frankenstein at Villa Diodati on Lake Gineva. The plot. Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, creates a human being by joining together pars of corpses, but the results is ugly and revolting. The monster becomes a murderer and in the end he destroys his creator. The story is introduced by a series of letters written by Walton, a young explorer on an expedition voyage to the North Pole, to his sister, Margaret Walton. The setting. The events of the story happen all over Europe from Geneva, to France, England, Scotland. The most important setting is the North Pole that mirrors the monster’s states of mind. The creation is next to Frankenstein’s university at Ingolstadt. The influence of science. The latest scientific theories of chemistry and electricity influenced Mary Shelley; indeed the scientist creates a human being through the use of these methods. Literary influences: Mary Shelley was influenced by:  Rousseau, because the monster is a noble savage;  Locke for the monter’s self-awareness and his education;  Gothic stories;  The Rime of the Ancient Mariner;  The Myth of Prometheus, in fact Frankenstein is an example of an overreacher. Narrative structure. It is an epistolary novel + Chinese box:  Walton’s narration to his sister Margaret Walton  Frankenstein’s narration to Walton  The monster’s narration to Frankenstein Main characters. Captain Walton and Doctor Frankenstein tried to go beyond human limits. The monster is complementary to his creator; they both suffer from isolation and they both begin with a desire to be good. Themes.  The quest for “forbidden knowledge” is related to the theme of the overreacher.  The double: Frankenstein and the monster  The overcoming of natural and divine rules: the creation of a human being without a woman;  Social prejudices: the monster as an outcast;  Education and experience
