Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in England and a testament to the early inhabitants of Britain, probably built between 3000 and 2000 before Christ. Hadrian’s Wall was a defensive fortification built in 122 Annus Domini in the reign of Emperor Hadrian to mark the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. (The Romans invaded Britain for the first time in 55 BC and conquered it in 43 AD, under Emperor Claudius) Sutton Hoo is an archeological site. It was a place where aristocrats were buried around the 7th century in East Anglia. It gives interesting information about Anglo-Saxon England. In 1939 a burial ship was found there, full of things probably belonging to Anglo-Saxon king Raedwald. The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth from the 11th century with pictures and Latin text. It tells about the Norman conquest of England in 1066 (William of Normandy invaded England and at the famous Battle of Hastings King Harold was killed. Anglo-Saxon rule finished then, after 600 years. The Magna Carta is an important document, written in Latin and signed in 1215 by the barons and King John. The king promised to govern England according to the feudal law, and the document defined his behaviour to his barons, the position of Catholic Church and England’s legal system. It limited the powers of the king for the first time and gave everybody the right to be treated justly under the law. The Domesday Book, written in Latin, is the result of a survey about the lands , the owners of the lands and what they produced. It was useful to calculate the taxed landowners had to pay and it is importand to understand medieval life under William I.
