MODAL VERBS IN THE PAST When we use modal verbs to talk about the past , they generally have the same meaning as thy do in the present , but we have to structure the sentence differently. 1.should Used to express recommendation or advice Positive form = Should + have +past participle Negative form = should + not + have + past participle Es: i’m sorry i’m late , i should have left the house earlier . I shouldn’t have shouted at you yesterday. .the verb should is used to express that something was better done in a different way in the past, to suggest or to express regret . 2.could Could is often used to express possibilities Positive form= Could + have + past participle , Negative form= couldn’t + have+ past participle . Es: she could have beenan olympic champion in she had worked harder ; We didn’t go to the concert . We couldn’t have got in anyway, there were no tickets left . Could express something that stopped the possibility from becoming reality . 3.would Would is used when we imagine something Positive form: would + have +past participle; Negative form: wouldn’t have + past participle . Es: if i had got 2 more points on the grammar test , i would have passed the exam . Would is used with a lot more certainty than could have . This means not just a remote possibility , but something we are certain would have happened . ACTIVE / PASSIVE SENTENCES In an active sentence , the thing doing the action is the subject and the thing receving the action is the object. An active sentence has the structure : Thing doing action + verb+ thing reciving action Es: the girl washes the dog; Harry drives his car ; In the passive sentence , the thing reciving the action is the subject of the sentence, the thing doing the action can be included at the end of the sentence , but it does not have to be . The passive is formed using the structure : Thing reciving action+be +past participle+by+ thing doing the action
