MODERN NOVEL AND THE STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS NOVEL “Modernism” usually refers to those novelists who actually experimented with new forms and who, while focusing on the mental process that develop in the human mind, tried to explore them through what is called the stream of consciousness technique. There is a distinction between the stream of consciousness and the interior monologue. - The stream of consciousness is a literary technique ( invented by William James), which consists in reproducing the free flow of thoughts, feelings and sensations of the characters without any comment by the author. - The interior monologue is the instrument used to translate the free flow of thoughts into words which can be direct or indirect.
