The first years of the 20th century were characterized by a transformation of British society which passed from the comfortable prosperous world of the Victorians and Edwardians to the years following the First World War which were marked by a moral and psycological uncertainty. This new realism was influenced by French and Russian writers and shifted the interest from society to man. The novelist rejected the omniscient narration and they preferred to portray the internal world of characters’ mind. The new techniques were the STREAM OF COSCIOUSNESS and the INTERIOR MONOLOGUE, which were introduced to reproduce the flow of thought, sensations, memories, emotions expressed in a language quite similar to the mind’s activity. The stream of consciousness refers to the mental activity itself, while the interior monologue is the instrument used to translate this phenomenon into words.
