James Joyce (1882-1941) DUBLIN Irish from Dublin he chose Dublin as the setting for most of his novels because he considered it an ordinary city with ordinary people living an ordinary life. Joyce was able in such a way to achieve a fusion between the inner world of his characters and the external one. THE REBELLION AGAINST THE CHURCH Considered a rebel among the rebels because he went into a voluntary exile at the age of 22 considering Ireland bigot and influenced by the Catholic church. He felt like an artist-heretic. STYLE Joyce thought the writer’s task was to describe life objectively which means he had to describe reality from the character’s point of view. Objective, Unobtrusive, Detached Narrator, then. Impersonality of the artist. Consequently Joyce used different narrative techniques and different points of view according to the characters portrayed. His language developed and changed from the disciplined prose of “Dubliners” and the use of the free direct speech to the interior monologue up to the extreme interior monologue. No Punctuation, No Sintax, Infinite Puns PERCEPTION OF TIME Joyce had a subjective perception of time which means Facts are not described from a geografical or sociological point of view but according to the characters’ floating mind.
