Mrs Dalloway Mrs. Dalloway is Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece.Woolf began Mrs. Dalloway in Sussex in 1922 and completed the novel in London in 1924.. The novel interweaves two seemingly unconnected storylines during a single day. 1. Mrs Dalloway Mrs Dalloway takes place in June of 1923. World War I ended in 1918, and though the United Kingdom was technically victorious in the war, hundreds of thousands of soldiers died fighting and the country suffered huge financial losses. In 1922 much of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom, and many of Britain’s colonies would reach independence in the decades following, including India, where Peter Walsh returns from. 2. Historical context It is a unique novel in that it takes place in a single day — a Wednesday in mid-June 1923. It follows the protagonist through a very small area of London. The novel takes place largely in the affluent neighborhood of Westminster, where the Dalloways live. The events are punctuated by the chiming of Big Ben. There are no chapters in the book, just 12 section breaks, one per hour. Mrs Dalloway critiques the conservatism and traditionalism of the upper classes at the time, while also portraying the tragedy of the “lost generation” following World War I, like Septimus as a victim of PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) 3. Setting Woolf’s characters show their deep humanity. Through the ‘tunnelling technique’ she allows the reader to experience the characters’ recollection of their past, that provides their background and personal history. Clarissa Dalloway’s party is the climax of the novel and unifies the narrative. The range of characters is small: they belong to the upper-middle class of distinguished doctors and lawyers, intellectuals and politicians, society hostesses whose role is simply decorative and entertaining. 4. Characters She is a London society lady of 51, the wife of a Conservative MP, Richard Dalloway. The influence of a possessive father, the frustration of a genuine love, the need to refuse Peter Walsh , all this has weakened. She is characterised by opposing feelings: her need for freedom and independence and her class consciousness. To overcome her weakness and sense of failure, she imposes severe restrictions on her spontaneous feelings. The novel begins with Clarissa’s point of view and follows her perspective more closely than that of any other character. Clarissa He is a young poet and lover of Shakespeare. He is an extremely sensitive man who can suddenly dall prey to panic and fear or feelings of guilt for the death of his best friend, Evans, during the war.. He is a character specifically connected with the war, he is a «shell-shock» case, one of the victims of industrialised warfare. He is haunted by the spectre of Evans, he suffers from headaches and insomnia. He cannot stand the idea of having a child, he is sexually impotent. Septimus Warren Smith Significant changes in the social life of the time represented in the novel: • the spread of newspapers; • the increasing use of cars and planes; • the new standards in the marital relationship; • the success of the cinema. This framework leads to a complex series of relations, and her characters deal with the privacy, loneliness, and communication of these relationships in different ways. The insistent chiming of clocks reminds the reader of the temporal grid which organizes the narrative, of the passing of time in life and of its flowing into death. 5. Themes For Virginia Woolf subjective reality came to be identified with the «stream of consciousness» technique. Virginia never lets her characters’ thoughts flow without control, and she maintains logical and grammatical organisation. Her technique is based on the fusion of stream of thought into a third- person, past tense narrative. 6. Style Similar to Joyce’s «epiphanies» are Woolf’s «moment of being», rare occasions of insight during the characters’ daily life when they can see reality behind appearances. Fluidity is the quality of the language. The main character, Clarissa Dalloway, is a wealthy London hostess. She spends her day preparing for her evening party. She recalls her life before World War I, before her marriage to Richard Dalloway, and her relationship with Peter Walsh. Septimus Smith is a shell-shocked veteran, He is married to Lucrezia, an Italian woman. The climax is Clarissa’s party: it gathers all the people Clarissa thinks about during the day. It is at the party that Dr Bradshaw, the nerve specialist, speaks about Septimus’s suicide. 7. Plot
