How did we come to this period? There was the glorious revolution in 1688 when William of Orange married Mary; after that there was a period which lead to the rise of the constitutional monarchy., which was restricted by laws such as the Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement. The first one days back to 1689, thanks to the bill of rights the situation between the king and the parliament improved ant the parliament acquired great importance. In 1701 there was the act of settlement, which granted the succession to the throne of Britain to only protestant rulers, sovrans. This period which started after the glorious revolution, after the bill of rights and the act of settlement, this period of peace and prosperity which was called the Augustan age. This period was characterized by trade, which flourished in this period, the individual initiative and enterprise was really important. The figure of the merchant acquired relevance, and everyone was convinced that with personal enterprise you could reach success easily. The middle class was firmly established, that was the period of the growth of the middle class (la borghesia). Britain entered the Age of Reason, the age of enlightment. Rationalism and pragmatism prevailed. There was the conviction that the world was considered something ordered, hieratical, rational. Men had the idea of having the possibility to govern the world around and that was what happened also with nature. They thought to have control over nature. It comes from Voltaire. There was the belief in reason, common sense, progress, civilization. With individual initiative men could make progress, make the world more civilized. Neoclassical art arose in opposition to the decorative styles of rococo and baroque. This kind of art was characterized by order and restraint, in opposition to the grandeur and the frivolous elements of baroque and rococo art. The primary neoclassical belief was that art had the mainly task of moralizing, it had a moralizing message, the power to civilize and transform society. There was this idea that art could be a means to civilize and transform society. Neoclassical architecture was based on the principles of symmetry, simplicity, proportional harmony and mathematics and these principles were seen as virtues of the arts in ancient Greece and Rome. The models taken as examples were classical Greece and classical Rome. You could find this revival and this vivid interest in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. We have important writer, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, John Dryden who found inspiration on the classical period. They adopted the style, the subject of Greek and roman writers. Pope defined the main neoclassical principles in literature: wit, rationality and literary decorum (elegant harmony of style and content). In this period the kind of poetry adopted an unfamiliar language, a high flow language, an elevated language, poetic diction. This kind of language was a prerogative of poetry, sophisticated, elaborate. The most important genre was prose. The main ruling class was the middle class, prose was the genre which mirrored the taste of the middle class. There is in this period the rise of the novel. The authors are Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding. These three authors started this new genre which was the novel. In this period also come out the first newspapers. Freedom of the ideas, people are free to think and to discuss. They discussed politics and other relevant thing in clubs. The novel is a kind of prose of writing which reflects the life of the middle class of the period, it is a product of this class. Queen Ann was the last Steward. Under George I there was the first Prime Minister (cerca il nome e l’anno) Oath of the Horatii It talks about a conflict between romans and people form Alba. Three brothers and the father. They are taking this oath to defend Rome and die for Rome. There is an architectural structure, there are arches. The three brothers are framed by an arch, just as the other people. The composition is symmetrical. The theme is about Rome, classical theme, this is a roman legend. The wife ant the sisters are grieving fort the probable death of the man who’s going to combat.
