Summary 1 During the 19th century, New Orleans was one of the prosperous city of United States, with excellent agriculture focused on the transport of cotton, sugar, lemons or oranges that joined it with Europe and South America. Sicily was one of the places with which New Orleans was linked at that time especially in a commercial way. The city offered a lot of organisations and a brilliant way of work for merchants. However Italians people that arrived in New Orleans to find a new job, to escape from poverty, had the same life of black Americans workers that lived near the plantation where they used to work. Life here, for Italians people was not easy, they had to stay in agricultural communities in the poorest area of the town. Although in 1890 there were a lot of colonies were lived Italians people in United States. It is important to emphasize that the situation was changing when in 1891 the police chief Daniel Hennessy was killed by 12 bullets from shot gun. From this moment the investigations started and 150 Italians were interrogated because the killer disappeared in the dark. In order to vindicate de assassination of the police 9 Italians were shot down for the presupposed link with the Mafia. To sum up between 1886 and 1916 were lynched in total 39 Italians people.
