'NO MAN IS AN ISLAND' No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because | am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. “‘MEDITATION XVII’, from Devotions upon Emergent Occasions John Donne NO MAN IS AN ISLAND UNTO HIMS In the second part of the poem, Donne returns to the idea that every person is part of something bigger, such as a community and that every person is connected to other human beings. Through the metaphor of the continent Donne wants to say that when a person dies (a clod is washed away), the community will be different because one part of the a community dies too (the continent will be less). In the end, = the poet says to do not ask for who the bell tolls because it tolls for all of us. We have understood that Nobody is alone. We are all connected with each other. The end of the poem tells us that when we hear the bells playing someone is dead, we don't need to ask who they are. It is as if a part of us also dies because we are all linked to each other. ee Poetry tells us that a piece of land is as important as one big house, therefore, even the people who they seem unimportant to the world they are as important as we and our friends. ...FINAL THOUGHTS The phrase ‘NO MAN IS AN ISLAND’ means that no one is truly self-reliant, everyone must rely on the companionship and comfort of others to evolve. * This phrase is also found in many proverbs, for example "We must learn from each other because no man is an island," said Ms. Dokoni.
