After the execution of the King, England was proclaimed a Commonwealth, a Republic, and, until 1653, it was under the rule of the House of Commons, called “The Rump” because many of its members had been removed when they opposed the trial of Charles |. Meanvrhile, the decision to execute the King provoked a Royalist reaction in Ireland and Scotland. Cromwell took his troops to Ireland where massacred the combined force of Protestant and Catholic Royalist at Drogheda; while in the Battle of Dunbar defeated the Scots. In April 1653, Cromwell closed down the Rump Parliament and was nominated by his army “Lord Protector of the Realm” and obtain the same power of a king. He ruled over the three kingdoms of England, Ireland and Scotland. The Puritan republic was an oppressive regime. Theatres were considered immoral and were closed down; it was introduced the “Adultery Act”, which introduced the death sentence for adultery or incest. Cromwell was succeeded by his son Richard, but he abdicated eight month later. The Republic slowly fell apart and everyone declared themselves in favour of the return of the Stuarts
