His mom died just after his birth and Oliver spends his first nine years of life in a home for orphans → after which he’s transferred to a workhouse for adults. Convinced by the other boys, Oliver asks for more soup at the end of the meal, and Mr Bumble, the parish Beadle, on the other hand, chases him away. Oliver escapes and after working for an undertaker, he decides to move to London. Here, on the outskirts, he meets another boy called Jack Dawkins, known as the artful dodger, who offers him a place to stay in the house of his benefactor Fagin, who actually is a criminal => who trains kids to become pickpockets for his own benefit. Oliver is sent on mission with two other boys, but when he sees them stealing a handkerchief from an old gentleman, he is horrified and he runs away. Mr Brownlow, the old gentleman, decides to look after Oliver taking him home. → There, Oliver is very happy but he is soon captured by Bill Sikes, a famous criminal, and his girlfriend Nancy, who take him to Fagin. Fagin sends Oliver to help Sikes in a burglary , but he is shot by a servant and he’s taken by the owner, Mrs Mayle and her adopted niece Rose. Oliver spends a happy summer with them, who really like him, but Fagin and a mysterious man named Monks are determined to recapture him. At this point, it is revealed that when she died, Oliver’s mom left a gold locket which Monks acquired and destroyed. When the Maylie Family comes to London, Nancy secretly meets Rose and she tells her Fagin’s plan, but she is overheard by a member of Fagin’s gang who informs Sikes. The criminal kills his girlfriend for her betrayal and he leaves London. The Maylies reunite Oliver and Mr Brownlow , who decides to discover the truth about Oliver’s family, finding Monks. He discovers that Monks is actually Oliver’s half brother and that their father, Mr Leefors, was unhappily married to a rich woman and had a love story with Oliver’s mother Agnes. Monks’ aim was to pursue Oliver, depriving him of his part of the inheritance.
