Oliver grew up in the workhouse but one day when he asks for some more food the parish who headed the workhouse decided to sell him because of his outrageous gesture. He was sold but he managed to escape to London and he became part of a gang of robbers; he tried to robber Mr Brownlow but he failed and the victim realised Oliver had no bad intentions because he was forced to commit the crime so he adopted him and at the end Oliver find out he had noble origins. SETTINGS AND CHARACTERS • London with its social classes • Parochial world of the workhouses • Criminal world • The victorian middle class • The child is represented as innocent and ruined by adult’s mentality DIDACTIC AIM He wanted to show to his readers the horrible condition of poor people, he wanted to make the upper class aware of this situation without offending his middle-class readers. CHARACTERS • He completely changed the common character of the 18th century who was realistic of the middle-class world replacing him with one of the lower class. • Created caricatures characterised by exaggeration of their habits with social peculiarities, vanity ad ambitions that are ridiculed (without sarcasm). • He was always on the side of poor people, children who were the most important characters for Dickens, they were the representation of innocence, opposite of corrupt adults. Female characters were weak (inspired from his mother and his 1st wife). STYLE AND REPUTATION Graphic and powerful description of life, effective language, usually happy ending. He is considered the greatest novelist of English literature In this novel Dickens attacks the workhouses in which life conditions were terrible, human dignity was absent and they didn’t provide for a progress of the society. He also denounce the owner of the workhouses because of the level of exploitation and poverty that they caused
