Oliver Twist Charles Dickens o Plot o Biography o Place and time settings o Narrator o Characterization o Intertextuality o Personal evaluation CHARLES DICKENS BIOGRAPHY Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, in England and he died on June 9, 1870 of a stroke. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented popularity. He is now considered a literary genius because he created some of the world’s best known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. PLACE AND TIME SETTING The author doesn’t speak about place and time settings, but we can understand that the story is set in England and it lasts for a year. Charles Dickens, in fact, says that information about the city and the year are not important for the reader. NARRATOR The narrator of ‘Oliver Twist’ is a third person narrator: he is external, introduces the characters, and describes what happens. He is unobtrusive because he never intervenes and he is omniscent because he knows and sees everything, so the reader knows only what he chooses to tell. CHARACTERISATION Oliver Twist, both innocent and morally sensible, he gives force and sharpness, to Dickens’ vision of social injustice. Mr. Brownlow, the benevolent man who gives Oliver care and trust, solves the question of his parentage, and finally adopts him. Fagin, a guy who trains boys for stealing and receives stolen goods and is paid to bring Oliver up as a thief, but he fails. Bill Sikes, Fagin’s accomplice, the leader of Fagin’s band of thieves. A violent, brutal man, he deserts Oliver. Nancy, a female thief, a member of Fagin’s gang. She befriends Oliver and informs on Fagin’s activities in order to save the boy. Monks, Oliver Twist’s stepbrother. A vengeful person, he plots with Fagin against Oliver to keep the boy from his inheritance. PERSONAL EVALUATION In my opinion, the book was very sad at some parts, it really made me think of the world we live in today. Despite being treated horribly, in some ways, Oliver shows that no matter what anyone goes through, they should remain positive and look on the bright side of their situation. I liked the fact that Fagin and Sikes tried to change Oliver, but he continued to be an innocent good boy. My favorite character is Mr. Brownlow, who took care of Oliver and loved him despite the things he had done, and his past; and my favourite part is when he is accused of a robbery he hadn’t committed and Mr. Brownlow took him to his house because he was sick.
