It tells the story of an orphan who preserves his angelic character despite a very hard life. The book is a perfect example of Dickens’ art : combining a sentimental and melodramatic story with social satire and realism. He attacks the new Poor Law which assigned poor people to workhouses in which living conditions were those of a prison. The plot: Oliver Twist is a poor boy of unknown parents . He is brought up (è cresciuto) in a workhouse in an inhuman way . One day he runs away to London . There he falls into the hands of a gang of young pickpockets led by Fagin, an old Jew, who forced Oliver to help them in their criminal activities. After many incidents, the boy is helped by a middle class old man , Mr Brownlow, that adopts Oliver and shows kidness and affection towards him. After some investigations it is discovered that Oliver is a relation to Mr Brownlow.
