ORALITY VS LITERACY Ong explains that orality is a "natural" event, instead literacy is an "artificial" event, because it has been created by human being. Ong suggests two type of orality: - primary orality (refers to those cultures that are unaware of written or printed technology); - secondary orality (refers to high-technology cultures that use new forms of orality such as television, raio, telephone). Some characteristics of primary orality's expresion: - it is additive rather than subordinative (and...and...and); - it is aggregative (that is, the speaker uses epithets and other formulary expressions); - it tends to be redundant and copious; - it conceptualizes and verbalizes knowledge with close reference to the human lifestyle, a preference for the concrete rather than the abstract; - it is highly agonistic, which demonstates the importance of interpersonal relations with respect both to attractions and antagonisms. - it needs to be shaped in mnemonic patterns, such as alliterations, assonaces. Literacy, on the other side, is absolutely necessary for the development of ideas.
