O. whose real name was Eric Blair, was born in India where his father worked in the Indian Civil Service. At the age of 8 was sent to England to be educated. In 1917 he entered a college, there he began to develop his socialist ideas which were often a matter of discussion with his teachers and schoolmates. He also developed an independent minded personality. He was an atheist and socialist. After school, instead of going to University he joined the Indian Imerial Police, he disliked this job because he had to excercise power over the local population. He went back to England, in London he went to work with the working classes and wore second hand clothes. After a period in Paris he decided to publishhis works with the pseudonym of George Orwell, (George is an england name and Orwell was the name of a river he loved). He began writing “Animal Farm” during the second World War, it was published in 1945 and made Orwell internationally known. Orwell’s last book was 1984 (Nineteen-eighty four) and soon became a bestseller. All the works of Orwell seems alike, all of them are stories of characters who move against the background of their own experiences. Orwell projected his personal problems and rapresented a world dominated by Social Injustice. 1984: The novel describes a future world divided into three blocks: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. The oppressive world of Oceania is ruled by a figure called Big Brother, Oceania is always in world with Eurasia and Eastasia. It is a very pessimistic novel a future totalitarian society in which men’s personality and beliefs are crushed by political forces. The protagonisti is Wilson Smith, he writes a diary of his thoughts and memories, this diary is for the future generations, the novel is set in a state of perpetual war. The story takes place in a terryfing London in 1984, it is a dystopian novel: an imaged world far worse than our own, opposed to the Utopia which is an ideal place or state. Estasia= China and its satellite nations; Eurasia= Soviet Union; Oceania=United States and United Kingdom The character of Big Brother is both Stalin and Hitler. Orwell was against any form of totalitarism. The Big Brother, the dictator does not watch over his people like a brother should do, so watching in this contest doesn’t mean taking care of, but it’s a way of controlling
