The aesthetic movement, initiated by goethe in france, emphasized art for art's sake and the pursuit of beauty. After graduating from magdalen college, he moved to london and began publishing poems. Marrying constance lloyd in 1884, he later wrote 'the picture of dorian gray,' which was considered scandalous due to its homosexual themes. In prison from 1895 to 1897, wilde wrote 'de profundis' and 'the ballad of reading gaol.' he died in paris in 1900. 'the picture of dorian gray' is wilde's most famous work, exploring themes of vanity, morality, and the supernatural.

The Aesthetic Movement Developed in France with Goethe, but spread all over Europe in the last part of the 19th century. His motto is: Art for art's sake ~>Art without any moral principle. Is the search for beauty in every field and a reaction against the ugliness. Its major rappresentative was Oscar Wilde who wrote one only novel: The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1891. Oscar Wilde (1854, Dublin) His parents were the most influential people in his life: ● His father, Sir William was a famous eye doctor but also a heavy drinker. ● His mother, Lady Jane was a linguist and very eccentric, so influenced Oscar with many notions. At school he was an excellent student that loved the classic like greek and latin, in fact received a gold medal for ‘The Best Student of Greek’ He started writing at the Magdalen College. After his graduation he went to live in London and started to publish poems. Oscar became known as an important figure of the Aesthetic Movement: This movement believes in a devotion of beauty for itself and not for any moral or social principle. In 1884 he married Costance Lloyd and had two sons. Four years later he began a period of freneting writing in which he published his novel: The Picture of Dorian Gray, that in 1891 was considerate scandalous, particulary for its homosexual allusion. During the final years of his life, he met a young Aristocrat called Lord Alfred Douglas: His father, an unstable man, heard of the affair and sent Oscar an insulting card. Oscar decided to take legal proceedings against him, but it was a bad decision because was sent to prison with the labor force for two years. In prison he wrote his most beautiful novel: ● De Profundis, that was a letter to Lord Alfred. ● The ballad of the reading goal, dedicated to the other prisoners. He left prison and went to live in Paris, staying with his friend or in cheap hotels. He died of cerebral meningitis in Paris in 1900, at the age of 46.
