Pag. 124 OSCAR WILDE BIOGRAPHY Origins Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854 Parents His father was a surgeon and his mother was an ambitious literary woman Education  He went to the Trinity College in Dublin  Then he went to Oxford  He became a disciple of Walter Pater and so he accepted the theory of “Art for Art's Sake”  In 1878 he gained a first-class degree in Classics Model His model was the art critic John Ruskin Success He moved to London, where he became a celebrity thanks to his extraordinary spirit and because he dressed as a “dandy” (= as a rich man, smartly) First work  In 1881 he published a collection called “Poems”. In USA  He did a lecture tour in USA and it was very successful  In New York, he told reporters that Aestheticism was a search for the beautiful, a science through which men looked for the relationship between painting, sculpture and poetry  He became famous for his irony, his attitudes and his posing Marriage  While he was returning to Europe, in 1883 he married Constance Lloyd Short stories  The Canterville Ghost  Lord Arthur Savile's Crime  The Happy Prince and Other Tales Novel (In 1891) The Picture of Dorian Gray Passion for drama  He became passionate about the drama  (At the end of the 19th century) he produced a series of plays  His masterpiece was The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) Bad reputation After his tragedy Salomè: in fact, it could not be performed on the stage because of his obscenity Dramatic reputation (In 1891) After he dated a young poet, Lord Alfred Douglas, and was tried for homosexuality, which was illegal in Britain. Prison He went to prison for 2 years Free  When he became free again, his wife rejected him  He went into exile in France, where he lived in poverty Death He died of meningitis in 1900 in a Paris hotel.
