The friendship between Svevo and Joyce was born out of completely random circumstances. In fact Joyce, exile from Ireland, taught in Trieste at the Berlitz School, and Svevo took English lessons from him. For Joyce "it was an immense relief, in the deadly boredom of teaching, to find at least one pupil with whom to converse". Those lessons soon turned into literary discussions. Therefore, during the visits to Svevo's home, the Irish writer did not disdain to talk about his literary projects and Svevo was soon able to read and admire some of his works. In that same autumn Svevo also submitted his first two novels Una vita and Senilità, unsuccessfully published a few years earlier, to Joyce's judgment.
